The Winter Band Concert
Special Holiday Release (Dec. 25)

Last Updated: January 7, 2007

Happy Holidays! (We believe in political correctness here, no matter how corny it may seem!) Nevertheless, this page is my special Christmas present (because that is what I celebrate) to all of you who supported me the past few months! On average, there are about 20 people who check my site everyday which is what gave me the motivation to do so much work this year. So really, you deserve a bonus for..uh...all of those times that you clicked the link to my website on your favorites! I hope that you all will enjoy these pictures just as much as I did taking them...

On Thursday, December 14th, 2006, we hosted our annual Winter Concert in the Poway High Gymnassium. The dress was formal and it was really nice to see everyone dressed up. (Plus, I tied my tie in a record 45 minutes with only 17 retries!) This concert really is one of the most important band traditions at Poway because it is a chance to introduce the 7th and 8th graders to the world of marching band. Hopefully we made a great impression and I would love to see all of those 8th graders at band camp next year.

Now for the concert. The concert featured a broad age range of students from both Poway High and Twin Peaks Middle School. (I still wonder when the Meadowbrook middlers will be invited to come...) The fun began at 7:00 PM with the TPMS students playing Hanukkah and Christmas medleys and a new arrangement of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" music. I very much enjoyed their last piece, as well as the entire performance. TPMS alumni hopefully had a chance to greet our wonderful and enduring middle school band teachers, Mr. Fitch, Mr. Moreau, and Mr. Nowak.

Then it was the high school bands' turn. If your life has any kind of meaning whatsoever, you should know that we played the legendary Russian Christmas Music first, joined by some Poway band alumni. We practice the music for three weeks prior, but only get one chance to show it off a year! Following Russian came our parade march, The Directorate and finished up with the main course, We Will Rock You! The crowd of parents/alumni went crazy after the field show as you will hear on the recording. Speaking of recordings...

Finally it was time to wrap everything up with a full ensemble with all of the band students. After assembling all of the students in their respective sections, we played two songs. A slow and melodic chorale, Silent Night was first up, conducted by Mr. Sybilski. The concert concluded with a Holiday Sing-Along, conducted by none other than our beloved musical mastermind, Mr. Cook. The performance of this song was a little shaky, but it didn't matter because we were having so much fun!

So now it is time for me to wrap this page up with a sentiment: Memories are powerful. This is why I share them. But you cannot hold on to the past, nor live in the past. That is what this year has taught me. Change is inevitable (whatever that means). Make the right choices based on what is truly important to you. Now...go out and have a wonderfully blissful and relaxing Christmas/Holiday. Your steadfast friend,
Joshua aka macgyversfriend
